After a car accident in Texas, who do I call first, my insurance company or the body shop?

Short answer

Call the police first if anyone is hurt or a vehicle cannot be driven safely, because Texas law requires that report immediately. Then call your own insurance company and get the adjuster's name and number. The body shop is the one call with no deadline on it, so call us whenever you are ready, before or after you file.

Can my insurance company make me use their body shop in Texas?

No. Texas law says you choose the shop that repairs your vehicle. Your insurer can suggest a shop from its list, but it cannot require one, cannot tell you the repair will not be covered unless you use one, and cannot make you drive an unreasonable distance to get the work done.
